Nichi Bei Creative Artists Fellows Jesse Schlesinger and Masayo Funakoshi are collaborating on a project that explores sustainability through the lens of food and agriculture. Earlier this year – and before the pandemic – Schlesinger visited Japan to develop and research the project with Funakoshi. The team spent weeks traveling to destinations like Saga Prefecture, Kyoto, and Osaka; their activities included meeting with local farmers, cooking with geothermal steam, and learning about community arts, crafts, agricultural practices, and histories.
