Years before becoming a Nichi Bei Creative Artists Fellow, composer Gene Coleman created “Sendai Transmissions,” a video and musical composition inspired by the work of Japanese architect Toyo Ito. In the video, Coleman’s haunting, ambient music accompanies images of “Sendai Mediatheque,” a Miyagi Prefecture library that Ito designed; the visuals also include hypnotic animated graphics of Japanese text and fractal geometric patterns.
